ART 118: Process and Synthesis
This course stresses drawing from a conceptual and metaphorical point of view. Development of strategies for problem-solving, building vocabulary, experimenting, and expanding concepts of drawing. Students produce projects of a longer time frame than in previous drawing courses. The relationship between media and technique is emphasized to demonstrate content. Class exercises and research are frequently performed as preparation for projects completed outside class.
ART 117: Drawing Systems and Color
Emphasis on the investigation of drawing concepts and methods with emphasis on design systems and principles. Studio activities include creative problem solving and research involving color theory, function, and applications in the making of art. 
ART 116: Descriptive Drawing
Through observational drawing, using black and white media, students learn the skills needed to realistically render 3-dimensional objects on a 2-dimensional surface. Renaissance systems of perspective and chiaroscuro drawing are explored along with the formal aspects of drawing such as line, tone, shape, rhythm, composition, space and proportion.

The advanced painting course provides students with a loosely structured sequence of conceptual painting problems that are based upon modern and contemporary artistic practices. Through studio projects that engage broad topics in painting, students will begin to define their own personal interests and develop an informed individual aesthetic. This course leads students to develop a greater level of conceptual knowledge and technical skill. Studio projects are be augmented by critical readings and lectures.

The intermediate painting course builds upon the formal skills learned in beginning painting and cultivates further conceptual understanding. Through a series of studio projects based upon a variety of historical approaches to painting, students will strengthen their mastery of materials and techniques while developing an increased understanding of the relationship between the form, subject and content.
ART 276: Basic Painting II
Professor Julie Dummermuth 
In this introductory painting course, students expand on the basic techniques of pictorial representation: color mixing, color composition, alla prima painting, under-painting and glazing. Through studio assignments, students explore a variety of approaches to painting and gain competence using these techniques and materials (which includes installation, segmented, and large format projects). Studio assignments are augmented by discussions, critiques, illustrated lectures and the analysis of historic and contemporary paintings.
